For Ed Ball, the answer must be in the low teens… released alonside efforts under his own name (why do I need a gun, I’m chelsea) and by the Teenage Filmstars, Pirate Playlist 66 is the first new Times album in a few years. Whereas earlier in his career, Ed used The Times as his primary vehicle for pop, dance and whatever else made sense at the time, this time out (pardon the pun) they become the vehicle for an interpretation of the album Ed would have made back in ’66.

Pirate playlist remains true to it’s intent: any of the songs on here could indeed be sixties anthems. All done though with Ed’s usual flair for a deft word and a hummable hook. If only the titles made jut a little more sense!

It’s sad but true that the world will probably never wake up to Ed’s musical mastery, but for those who love him this is another fine album. It’ll be interesting to see what happens to Ed post-Creation…
